I had a thread up in the stories forum, and I asked people to archive.
Well, unfortunately that thread was deleted today. I dont know why, as I tried to stay within the rules, and did not post the name or address to this forum.
But I can`t say that I did not try.

Now it will be up to the members of that forum, as it should be.

Whilst I can understand the sentiment behind a desire to 'save' stories posted on BF it raises other issue, copyright.

If the author included permission for his/her story to be reposted to other sites (often limited to free sites) then all is fine.

BUT

Copyright law is simple, unless permission is granted, anyone copying the authors work is breaking the law. No matter the course or the intent of the copier.

It seems that this site will be hosting a lot of artists. It is to be expected that they would object to their work being copied and used, without their permission, especially when the use makes money for the thief. I would hope we would all respect the artist on this site, but doing so requires us to respect ALL copyright.

I agree it would be sad to see stories effectively disappear onto the ether, but I cannot and will not condone theft. Most especially because it has recently cost me a good deal of both time and money to have my stories removed from sites that had stolen them.

So, before we go down a path that could well lead to legal action against this site, let's consider the consequences first, please.

Please excuse me as im not very good with words......

I do agree.
And we dont really have to save all of those images and stories, because unfortunately, they are already on other sites.
Most artists know that as soon as we post our work on bf, within hours or sometimes even minutes, they are already on other forums or blogs.

My thought is that the writers and artists can always come here and claim their work at anytime, and say that they don`t want their content in our archive, and it will be respected.

On BF, when I signed up, I agreed via the TOS, that all of my posts and content could be used by them, on any or all of their sites.

Although I love the community, that as one of the problems that got a lot of good posters banned over the years.
They created their home moves and pictures, to be shared within the community, and then found them on paysites. When they questioned or complained, they got banned.
I just kept my mouth shut, and looked the other way.

Now because i can have a say.........I believe that everyone owns their own content here. If you dont want it on here, I will remove it. If you leave......you can take it with you. You created it, it belongs to you. And thank you for sharing.
I don`t need a copyright if I know you created it.

On an A$$hole note on copyright:
I find a lot of my work on monetized blogs and even paysites.
A website owner which took my art, and put it behind a paywall once told me when I asked for it to be removed.... "show me your copyright". hmmmm...I have none.
They then explained (and it`s probably true), that anyone can put a copyright symbol on anything, but did they actually pay for a real copyright?
We as creators all have to be aware of that.

So now, I gave up on chasing down those people.
Because I dont have the money to copyright the almost 1000 images that I have made over the past 9 months, and I am absolutely sure that I dont have the balls to submit a copyright application for bestiality images.
These sites know this.

On a bright note, when I do get a new commission, I always ask (if I dont already know), how did you hear of me?
A large percentage of the time, they found my work on those same sites who stole them, and they tracked me down.

But yes.... any writer or artists wishes shall be respected.

I hope I made some sense, instead of sounding like I was ranting LOL (I wasn`t).

I`m not the smartest guy and I may be wrong, so if I am, tell me and I will listen.

I've chopped up your post to simplify responding.

My thought is that the writers and artists can always come here and claim their work at anytime, and say that they don`t want their content in our archive, and it will be respected.

That might seem fair, but it is actually the same as saying, "yes I stole your phone, but if you ask me, I'll give it back." To respect copyright either the author included permission in the original story, or he/she grants permission.

On BF, when I signed up, I agreed via the TOS, that all of my posts and content could be used by them, on any or all of their sites.
Although I love the community, that as one of the problems that got a lot of good posters banned over the years.

When I discovered they posted my stories on one of their pay sites without asking me first, I used a DMCA to force them to take it down. No ban probably because at that time I'd not posted about it on their site and also because they knew they were in the wrong.

Now because i can have a say.........I believe that everyone owns their own content here. If you dont want it on here, I will remove it. If you leave......you can take it with you. You created it, it belongs to you. And thank you for sharing.

We as creators all have to be aware of that.

Sorry, but what they told you is utter rubbish. Copyright begins upon creation. Period. An artist or writer can grant permission for use, even sell the copyright, but it is the user who has to prove permission/ownership NOT the artist/writer. Granted they can ask for proof to prevent idiots from making spurious claims, but that is all that is needed. A properly worded DMCA should be enough on its own.

So now, I gave up on chasing down those people.

I agree it would be very expensive in both time and money, one option would be to 'watermark' the work you post. An option unfortunately not available to writers.

If I can be of assistance further, please let me know.

You can always be of assistance my friend!

Maybe artists should watermark their work, I just sign mine.
This forum has a watermark option, but I wont do that because the forum does not own anything LOL

Thank you for your reply, and I am glad that you are here!

On a slightly different issue, would it be possible to make pages in the story section? When reading a story it takes ages to swipe down to where you was. Having pages helps you picking up where you left off.
Thanks

That would be fantastic!
But unfortunately, there are no modifications available that I have seen.
I`d definitely pick it up!

Don't hold your breath. The fact is that the "Forum" style of site isn't easily modified to a "Library" format, for a number of reasons. Those who want a "Library" format don't want it accessed through a forum so there isn't enough demand to do the extensive coding required. Also bear in mind that a "Library" requires a great deal of Admin/Moderator time as well.

What could be offered is the ability for authors to upload their stories as files, ePub etc which could then be downloaded by readers.

Not a perfect solution as many who post stories don't do much in the way of formatting etc so probably won't want to go to the effort of formatting to ePub etc.

Next is how those files would be catalogued, because without that it simply becomes a nightmare for a reader to find a story of a type that they enjoy.

Lastly is the security aspect, if writers format and upload the files and they are not scanned, it is possible that by accident or design they could be infected. I doubt anyone wants to download infected files so without some kind of security scan by the site staff, there is no realistic way for readers to trust those files.

A couple of years ago, I started to copyright all of my stories. When I found my stories on sites, that I had never been on, but I will say each site did credit me as the author of the story. So far! Anywho if anyone wishes to copyright their stories or artwork, here is where to go....

www.copyright.gov

Registrations online
$35 Single Application (single author, same
claimant, one work, not for hire) in other words, you did it entirely yourself with no help.
$55 Standard Application (all other filings)

one work, so $35 per story, unless your selling it on other sites that price is outrageous.
Generally people just throw a copyright notice on everything even tho they never filed a single thing.

Intellectual property is intellectual property. a creator does NOT have to register a work to keep control of the rights to that work. The Gov't Registration site makes it simpler to enforce the law, but thats all it does. " Throwing a Copyright notice on everything" is not a frivolous use of the Law, but an actual legal move to inform any misuser that as creator you are aware of your rights.
